Fourth Quarter

This quarter's newsletter was written by the third grade class.

Science: Science was so much fun this year! The best thing that happened in science was that we went to the Morton Arboretum to explore the pond community that we had been learning about. We saw the biggest tadpole we had ever seen! This year we also studied vertebrates and did research projects on them. We had a lot of fun making our posters, we each got to pick any vertebrate and research it. We learned a lot! We did a lot of fun experiments too. We learned why the ocean is so salty, but had to drink salt water. YUCK!

Bible: In bible we had a blast! We made our own comics, some are very silly, some are serious. One silly title was Extreme Comic: Bible Edition!, a serious title was simply The Story of Naaman's Leprosy. We also did a play about the life of Elijah, this was a lot of fun and we learned a lot about him. We learned memory verses and discussed what they meant with our families. Bible is one of our favorite subjects!

Social Studies: This year in social studies we started a recycling committee for the whole school. We have really helped protect God's creation. We have learned about the telegraph (Drew even brought one in that works), our family histories, how people came to the U.S. and how to be good citizens. We learned a lot and had fun too!

Math: Math is a really fun subject! Flashcards were really fun to make and they helped us learn our facts a lot. We also made pictographs by taking a class survey. We all thought multiplication was going to be really hard, but it wasn't. We even got to play multiplication bingo!

Reading & Writing: You may usually think reading and writing is no fun, but this year it was our favorite subject ever! We play a game called Blurt every morning. There's a definition on the board and we have to guess what the word is. It is so much fun! We have been learning to write essays too. We even learned to write in cursive, it is much neater than our print is. Our class really likes writing in cursive, it is cool. We've also made white books and have earned a lot of points for AR. Reading is actually fun!

Third Quarter

I can’t believe we are in the fourth quarter and that these hard working third graders are going to be in fourth grade before they know it! This past quarter we have been taking a close look at the life of Elisha and the incredible gifts God had given him and the things he was able to do. We have concentrated on the gifts God has given us and how we can use them to glorify Him. In social studies we have been taking a closer look at immigration, our own family history, and how society has changed over time. Math is very exciting at this time of year as these third graders have tackled multiplication! They have been working very hard to memorize these facts and apply them in story problems! This hard work will definitely pay off as we enter division. Accelerated Reader has really taken off this quarter, as we are all slowly getting a hang of it, thank you so much for your patience. The third graders have really been excited about reading! They have made great strides when it comes to book selection and their enthusiasm for reading. Science has also been a lot of fun this quarter as we have taken a look at the different types of living things God has created. We have been taking a closer look at what makes each animal group unique, and the benefits of their specific characteristics. In connection to this, we have looked at what makes us unique and the reasons for celebrating that uniqueness. I am so excited to see the ways God is continuing to help these third graders grow and develop into life-long learners as we enter 4th quarter!

Second Quarter

The school year is soaring by as we are already saying good bye to second quarter! The third graders have displayed such an incredible passion to learn and to do great things for God!

We have spent a lot of time this quarter looking at the lives of David and Elijah. We examined their faithfulness and the ways God was able to use them because of their incredible trust in Him. We have also spent a lot of time this quarter discussing ways God can use us when we trust in Him.

In social studies, we have been studying the development of our country and the role religion played in its formation.

In math, we have been studying data and probability and applying these concepts to all areas of our lives. The third graders have quickly realized how much we are surrounded by these things every day and the role they play in our day to day activities in the world, in our homes, at church, and in school.

The hard work and effort these students have put into reading this quarter is incredibly evident. They have been taking giant leaps in their book selection and in their levels of thinking about the text. They have completed several book reports that have really reflected their growth this quarter!

Keep up the great work as we enter another exciting quarter!

First Quarter

I can't believe first quarter is already ending! We have had a very exciting start to the school year! The third graders have been working very hard and have started a Recycling Committee. In social studies, we have spent a lot of time talking about ways that we can conserve our natural resources and protect the beautiful land God has blessed us with. After learning about this, they decided that it would be a great idea to begin recycling in our school. They have made boxes, prepared letters to introduce this idea to the other teachers and they have prepared speeches in order to tell the other classes about what we will be doing and to explain to them the importance of recycling. The third graders have really taken the lead on this project and are doing an incredible job!
